Veterinary toxicologist's findings pave way for massive dog food recall

Published on 2/4/2021

Dr. Tim Evans, board certified veterinary toxicologist and section head of toxicology at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, was the first to identify fatal concentrations of aflatoxin in commercial dog food manufactured by Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc in late Dec, 2020. His findings help launch FDA's ongoing and expandinpet food recall of Sportmix brand dog food and others such as Pro Pac and Nunn Better. More than 100 canine fatalities have been reported following consumption of Sportmix foods, and more than 200 more dogs have been sickened. Aflatoxicosis has not been diagnosed in all reported pets although the investigation is ongoing.

The Kansas City Star highlighted the origin of events leading to the current recall in their article on how a University of Missouri researcher helped save dogs from poisoned pet food.
