About this event
Join us at 6:00 pm CST as we welcome Dr. Karyn Bischoff speaking on Bee Toxicology.
Lecture Title: The Buzz on Bee Toxicology:
Lecture Description: As dramatic global insect declines make the news and the world begins to speculate on the impact of the catastrophic loss of natural pollinators, veterinarians have become more critical than ever in management of domestic bees. Although synthetic insecticides like neonicotinoids specifically target insects, we are only beginning to understand the impacts of sublethal exposures on colony survival. Additionally, we are learning that pesticides such as herbicides and fungicides, which don’t target insects directly, can affect bees in unexpected ways. Bees are not immune to many natural toxins, including natural phytotoxins from flowering plants. As beekeeping becomes more popular in cities, we learn more about unique urban and industrial toxicants that can affect bees and honey production. Finally, because bees are food-producing animals, exposure to toxicants impacts the human food chain. One example is mad honey, a luxury commercial product produced by bees foraging on specific toxic plants.
ABVT members are welcome to join 30 minutes prior to the lecture using a separate link on the ABVT Event Calendar for some social connection.
